INNOVECENTO: TECHNOLOGY APPLIED TO CULTURAL ASSETS

New technologies and a contest for the upcoming news

The Museo Novecento in Florence, opened on 24 June 2014, is an example of innovation since its inception, thanks to the multimedia approach that enriches the direct use of Italian art of the twentieth century with latest generation technologies. The in-depth materials presented on multimedia supports, distributed along the route, allow to expand the boundaries of the museum, which is increasingly offered as a device of knowledge and experience. To constantly improve the visitor experience, the Municipality of Florence has called together companies and professionals to propose ideas and solutions based on ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), with the aim of experimenting them for free for a certain period of time. at the Museo Novecento.

Thus was born INNOVecento – Museo Novecento Innovation Lab, a project that starts from the contents and technologies available within the museum, in search of developments through innovative software, such as augmented visit applications based on sensors or wearable systems, or even tactile interaction systems between physical and real objects and digital content, such as 3D prints or smart objects: these are just some examples of what can be tested to promote the advanced use of cultural heritage. The experiments will all be free of charge, but the occasion is tempting both for the Museum and for potential technological partners in terms of mutual visibility and shared planning.

News from Museo Novecento

At the moment – the notice is still open to new participations – five companies specialized in technologies applied to cultural heritage have joined the call.

Inmaps presents an APP (for Apple devices) that integrates indoor navigation and mobile marketing: visitors will be able to interact directly from their smartphone with the museum’s information structure and be guided step by step in a new multimedia visit experience. Through indoor navigation it will be possible to access a multimedia description of the works exhibited in the permanent collection as well as access to a vast archive of insights and receive real-time updates on events and exhibitions organized during the experimentation period.

NEMECH- New Media for Cultural Heritage is a Competence Center of the Tuscany Region established at the University of Florence, promoted by MICC Media Integration and Communication Center, MIUR Center of Excellence at the University of Florence. Nemech proposes the creation of an APP (for Android devices) with which to activate, during the journey to the museum, the camera of the device and photograph one of the exhibited works. The photo will be analyzed by the system and will be automatically and instantly recognized among the set of works being tested through the use of an original image processing technique. At this point, the application will provide the visitor with in-depth information made available by the Museum regarding the work, style and historical / artistic context of reference. At the same time, the visitor will have the opportunity to apply the ‘style’ of the work to a photo uploaded from his personal image gallery. The result of the processing will be sent to you by email in a few minutes

The Exibiamo project, born from an idea by Leonardo Perugini and Simone Lampredi, presents a virtual tour of three rooms of the Museo Novecento (accessible here), which can be explored from desktop and smartphone. The interactive Virtual Tour was created using sophisticated photographic processing and editing techniques. It will be possible to navigate inside the rooms and zoom in until you get close to the different elements present in the rooms: sculptures, paintings and architectural details. In each of the mapped rooms there will be hotspots of works from the permanent collection which will refer to an in-depth description of the work. The project also allows you to insert content, videos, works files, links with databases and additional information to the path.

3F Consulting S.r.L., a Web Engineering company focused for over 10 years on the development of complex portals and on the integration of processes and applications, presents at the Museum the demo of an innovative web service for booking museum activities through voice experimentation. Through voice commands it will be possible to fill in forms that allow the booking of the activities proposed in the Florentine Civic Museums. Through the service, the user can therefore experience a new way of using a web service using the voice instead of the classic keyboard.

MakeTank, a Florentine startup dedicated to Italian designers and their creations – online with an ecommerce of products that combine the tradition of made in Italy design with Digital Fabrication techniques: 3D printing, laser cutting, etc … – joined the call by creating a contest of design, DesignWinMake INNOVecento Edition, for the design of an exclusive object made with the 3D printing technique. Participants in the competition are asked to develop an innovative idea that combines design, art and architecture, declining the empty / full, light / shadow, shape / color relationship in original forms, starting from geometric elements transformed into visual and volumetric patterns, and capturing the suggestions of some works by representative artists of the Museo Novecento Firenze. DesignWinMake INNOVecento is aimed at creatives, makers and designers (individuals, groups or associations) who intend to take up the challenge of designing an object that is the result of an experiment born from the application of 3D printing in the museum field, and the product of a cultural operation with a strong innovative value. To participate in the competition it is required to fill in a registration form published on the website www.designwinmake.it and to send the project by 26 September 2016. For all the technical specifications, refer to the text of the announcement available on the competition website . Participation in the contest is free. The jury, composed of Laura Calligari (Arredativo.it), Luciano Cantini (Kentstrapper), Laura De Benedetto (MakeTank) Valentina Gensini (Museo Novecento di Firenze) and Alessandro Zambelli (designer), will evaluate the projects and will announce, by the end of October, the winner of DesignWinMake INNOVecento Edition. The prototype of the first classified project will be made at the expense of the technical partner Kentstrapper and marked with the DWM and INNOVecento logo. The award ceremony for the winning project will take place in Florence at the end of 2016.DesignWinMake INNOVecento Edition is the fourth edition of the DesignWinMake competition, conceived and promoted by MakeTank and the furniture and design webmagazine Arredativo.it. Technical partner of DWM INNOVecento Edition is Kentstrapper, a Florentine company that produces and sells Open Source 3D printers.

The teaching of programming languages and techniques through games and a fun environment is the project promoted and implemented by Coderdojo, and is aimed at young and very young users of the Museo Novecento. The free programming club for kids is part of an international movement that now has more than 400 coderdojos all over the world. The CoderDojos are entirely free and non-profit, organized thanks to the time and commitment of the volunteers who manage them. In Florence, the CoderDojo is formally a project of the “FabLab Firenze” Association whose volunteers support and allow them to organize their activities.

The appointment with the workshop for children (from 8 years old) is scheduled for a Saturday in November. Info and reservations for the workshop: Tel. +39 055 2768224 – +39 055 2768558, info@muse.comune.fi.it
