Tristanoil

Screening of the world’s longest film, created by Nanni Balestrini for DOCUMENTA (13), Kassel 2012.

On the occasion of the artistic project Colonne Verbali made by MUS. E in collaboration with BONOTTOEDITIONS.

Tristanoil  is a virtually infinite film, made with the help of a computer that assembles films lasting one minute each generating sequences always different. The work, built thanks to a program devised by Vittorio Pellegrineschi and video processing by Giacomo Verde, is dedicated to the theme of the destruction of the planet starting from the uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources, symbolized by oil. The frames, taken from different sources, reproduce sequences of the serial Dallas mixed with television reports dedicated to environmental disasters, the favelas, but also the Stock Exchange or war, with images immersed in the hallucinatory reflections of a viscous sea of oil.

The sound of the film is also the result of a combinatorial process. Among the sounds reproduced emerges the voice of Nanni Balestrini who reads some fragments of Tristan, his famous literary work.

Nanni Balestrini

member of the poets “Novissimi” and of the “Group 63 , he first made, in 1961, a poem with the computer. He is the author of the cycle of poems about Miss Richmond and the trilogy The Great Revolt (We want everything, The Invisibles and The Publisher) on the struggles of the movement in the seventies, and the electronic multiple novel Tristan. He recently published Caosmogonia (Lo Specchio Mondadori), Antologica, poesie 1958-2010 (Oscar Mondadori) and the novel Carbonia. We were all communists (Bompiani). In parallel with his literary output he developed an intense research in the visual field, documented by the monograph Con gli occhi del linguaggio. He is present in numerous galleries and museums in Italy and abroad, and has participated in international exhibitions and exhibitions including the Venice Biennale and Documenta, Kassel.
