De Chirico in Ferrara. Metaphysics and avant-garde movements

A conference connected with the exhibit at Palazzo dei Diamanti

The metaphysical current in painting was, together with Futurism, the greatest Italian contribution to European art in the first twenty years of the twentieth century, for its crucial role in the development of Dadaism, Surrealism, German painting in the twenties and for its determining influence on Italian art of the twentieth-century. A hundred years after their creation, the masterpieces by Giorgio De Chirico come back home to Ferrara: he painted them when, after the beginning of World War I, between 1915 and 1918, after passing by Florence, the artist stayed in Ferrara for his military service. The exhibit, the first dedicated to an analysis of such crucial period for the art of the twentieth century, offers the most complete exposition ever displayed of the metaphysical works painted in Ferrara by De Chirico and by his friend-enemy, companion-competitor Carlo Carrà. The small rooms with their dizzying perspective patterns, the sweets, the iconography with a painting within the painting, the famous mannequins, the silent squares, are the themes the exhibit focuses on, documenting the deep influence such works exercised in those years on Giorgio Morandi and Filippo De Pisis, and few years later on European avant-garde artists like Man Ray, Renè Magritte, Salvador Dalì and Max Ernst. Considering its extraordinary nature, De Chirico in Ferrara. Metaphysics and avant-garde movements is bound to be an event not to be missed and unlikely to be repeated: a fascinating journey through about eighty works including paintings, ready made pieces, watercolours, drawings, collage coming from the main museums and collections of the world.

Within the shared projects of Florence and Ferrara, started in 2013 on the occasion of the exposition of the masterpieces from the Boldini Museum and of the other collections of modern and contemporary art from Palazzo Massari, taking place at the Gallery of modern art in Palazzo Pitti and at the Bardini and Peyron Monumental Parks Foundation, the show will be introduced at the Museum of the twentieth century by Giuseppe di Natale, the Curator of the Fondazione Ferrara Arte and of Palazzo dei Diamanti.
