Every year since 1977 ICOM has organized the International Museum Day (IMD) worldwide, selecting a specific theme each time.
Also in Europe, since 2011 the European Night of Museums has been celebrated, which is held every year on the Saturday before International Museum Day, i.e. during the night between 18 and 19 May 2019.

The goal is to be aware of the fact that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace between peoples.
In Italy, the theme of the International Museum Day was at the center of the Festival of Museums
promoted by the Directorate General for Museums of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, with a formula designed to attract different types of audiences and induce them to reflect on our heritage in ways and perspectives different from the usual ones.

The 2019 Edition has as its theme: Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition and will focus on the new role of Museums as active actors in their communities of reference in the sense that they, while preserving their primary missions of collection, conservation, communication , research and exhibition, tend to become centers that function as cultural hubs seeking innovative ways to address contemporary social issues;
The Municipality of Florence adheres to the initiative through the Museo Novecento and Palazzo Vecchio where the exhibitions of the Sustainable Thinking project are currently underway, referring to the theme of environmental sustainability, also providing free admission for the whole day.
