Where and when

Sunday, January 27 2019, on the occasion of the Memorial Day Museo Novecento and MUS.E suggest a special meeting opportunity: the Leopoldines – now home to the Museo – are, in fact, a symbolic place for the florentine history.

In fact, in early March 1944 a large number of people were arrested from the soldiers of the Italian Social Republic in the city and in the province, were locked in the spaces of the ex-leopoldines’ school, recorded and questioned by the nazifascists. The women were all released, while 338 men were brought to the train station nearby and sent, with the transport of 8 March 1944, to the deportation in the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen and in its subfields: only 64 returned.

On the day when the international community commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, at the ex convent of the Leopoldines, here art and culture become a way for reflecting on the meeting opportunities, dialogue and mutual knowledge, unique antidotes against the hatred generated by stereotypes.

Here, then the dialogue with the works and the visitors will be conducted by a group of migrants of AMIR’s project, young coming from various countries who have studied the art of our time and Peninsula relating it with their own history, own origins, own homeland. The tour will allow the public to approach to some of the exposed artworks with the eyes of someone who has come to Florence as a “new citizen”: visitors will then be guided by voices from different cultures and will be invited to observe in a new way the shapes, codex, meanings of the italian art of our time and to truly understand how the work of art is “open” and “active center of a great network of endless relationships”.
