1. Countertrends at the 1988 Venice Biennale
Against an arts background dominated by the figurative, neoexpressionist and citationist painting of the Transavanguardia, the autonomy and originality of three young Florentine sculptors was recognised at the 1988 Venice Biennale (Open 88). The work of Antonio Catelani, Daniela De Lorenzo and Carlo Guaita marked a return to sculpture, interpreted in stark, geometrical, abstract and essential forms. Their innovative formal application launched a counter-trend that was to reach great success over the following decades, with a vocabulary that continued to enjoy currency with the young generations of the new millennium.
